Dr. Vash Chetty explains chiropractic treatment for neck pain and headaches:
According to the American academy of pain medicine, neck pain and headaches are the second most commonly reported pain conditions in America (1).
The neck is a highly mobile area of the spine that can move in most planes of motion. It consists of 7 vertebrae that are responsible to support the weight of our head which weighs on average 10 pounds.
Neck pain is a very common musculoskeletal complaint. Here are some main causes of neck pain:
1. Daily life: We spend a lot of time in front of computers, leaning forward in our seats. Leaning forward with your chin jutting in front of our bodies, makes our neck muscles have to work overtime to try to stabilize the weight of the head. This creates muscle imbalances in the neck and neck pain down the road.
2. Whiplash: rear end car accidents are the most common cause of whiplash. During a whiplash injury, the neck is subjected to quick extension followed by flexion creating sprains/strains and micro tears in the muscles.
3. Degeneration: The cervical joints have a unique structure compared to the rest of the spine. If degeneration occurs in the neck it is more likely to irritate the nerves coming out of the spine at the neck.
4. Disc degeneration disease
5. Osteoarthritis (2)
Headaches often accompany neck pain. The American academy of pain medicine claims that headaches produced, on average, 3.5 hours of lost productive time per week (1).
There are many different types of headaches such as migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches etc…
The most common type of headache is the tension type headache due to the sedentary lifestyle, desk jobs that require us to spend hours in one position in front of a computer.
Chiropractic has been found to be an effective treatment option for tension headaches, headaches that originate from the neck as well as neck pain. During your first appointment, you will have a detailed history and physical exam, to determine the origin of your pain.
Once that is determined treatment may consist of a combination of spinal manipulation, soft tissue massage, strengthening/stretching exercises at home and postural modifications.
