Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Back pain is a very common symptom that a pregnant woman will most likely feel at some point of her pregnancy. Here are a few factors that can have a affect a pregnant woman's spine:

1. Increase in hormones: The amount of estrogen and progesterone a woman produces in one pregnancy is more than she would produced in her whole life if not pregnant (2). These hormones cause ligament laxity which is a loosening of ligaments and joints throughout the body.

2. Weight gain: A woman will gain on average 30 pounds or more with one pregnancy. This places more strain on her joints.

3. Postural changes: Since most of this weight gain during pregnancy is located in the abdomen, this moves the center of gravity forward and places more strain on the spine especially the low back. It is also common to have neck and midback pain.

Chiropractic care can help reduce everyday aches and pain in spinal joints as well as reducing tension in muscles. This can make a big difference especially in the second and third trimester when daily activities become more and more uncomfortable.

Chiropractic care also plays a big role in aligning the pelvis for birth. If the pelvis is misaligned, it can create muscle tightness and ligament torsion (1) It can also prevent the baby from attaining a proper position for birth. Therefore it is key to check the sacrum, the round ligament, the sacrotuberous ligaments and the psoas muscle. These all play an important part in the alignment of the pelvis.
