With proper care, your auto injury will not become a long-term pain.

Dr. Vashi Chetty answers some frequently asked questions about chiropractic care for auto injuries below:

What is the most common injury in a car accident?

It is very common to have sprain/strains and whiplash after a car accident which means that your muscles, ligaments and tendons are over stretched. They might even have micro tears which cause bleeding and inflammation in your tissues. During a rear end collision your head is sent into a rapid extension followed by flexion like the cracking of a whip.

What are common symptoms after a car accident?

Neck pain, back pain, stiffness, headaches, chest pain (due to the seat belt), shoulder pain, hip pain, numbness/tingling in the hands/feet. These are all symptoms that are treatable by your chiropractor.

What are some treatment goals that chiropractic can help me achieve?

First and foremost getting you out of pain is the primary goal. Depending on the severity of the accident, it take weeks to months to get your pain levels back to normal. Once your pain levels are manageable or nil, the next goal is to build up the strength of your muscles. Overstretched muscles can become weak and need to be rehabilitated to prevent future injury or relapsing of symptoms. Therefore strengthening exercises are key to getting you back on track.

How long will it take to recover from my injuries?

Recovery time can be quite variable from person to person. It is dependent on the severity of the crash, age, overall health, whether you braced for the impact or not...Some patient take 12 months while other can go over the allowable year due to complications or re-injury.

What is PIP?

All auto insurance policies have Personal injury protection (PIP) and wage loss coverage. Oregon is considered a no fault state which means that if you are in in an auto, bicycle or pedestrian accident, your auto insurance provides a year of medical bills coverage or up to most commonly $15,000 per claim.

What kind of medical services are covered by PIP?

PIP will cover most medical bills related to the accident for up to a year or your policy’s max which is most commonly $15,000 per claim. These medical services include medical doctors (MD, DO), Chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopathic physicians and massage therapy. This means that you have no out of pocket costs when you seek care for an auto injury.
